Come anticipato pochi giorni fa, gli ultimi cinque blocchi di indirizzi IPv4 sono stati assegnati ai rispettivi Regional Internet Registry (RIR), che avranno così gli ultimi indirizzi IP da assegnare ai dispositivi collegati a Internet, dopodiché sarà necessario affidarsi necessariamente a IPv6 per espandere la rete.

La fine completa degli indirizzi, come sappiamo, non avrà luogo a breve ma è prevista entro i prossimi mesi, anche se è difficile predire con esattezza quando il protocollo IPv4 diventerà completamente obsoleto. Il primo RIR a finire i propri indirizzi sarà secondo le previsioni l’APNIC, quello dedicato all’area di Asia e Pacifico, mentre ARIN (Nord America) e RIPE (Europa, Russia e Medio Oriente) dovrebbero riuscire ad arrivare alla fine del 2011 senza rifiutare alcuna richiesta. LACNIC (Sud America) e AfriNIC (Africa) avranno invece ancora più tranquillità nelle assegnazioni di indirizzi.

In caso di fine prematura di indirizzi IPv4 comunque, tecnologie tipo quella NAT potranno sicuramente venire incontro per affrontare l’emergenza, ma si tratterà in ogni caso di un ripiego visto che il raggruppamento di più dispositivi dietro un unico indirizzo IP sta spesso stretto perfino alle utenze domestiche, figurarsi a quelle aziendali. La vera possibilità di progresso sarà quindi nelle mani di IPv6: i vari soggetti coinvolti ci hanno più volte ripetuto che il passaggio sarà indolore, programmando come sappiamo anche un World IPv6 Day per il prossimo 8 giugno, giorno in cui i principali siti web del mondo passeranno con tutta la loro piattaforma a IPv6.

Per noi comuni mortali il passaggio da IPv4 a IPv6 non comporterà fortunatamente nemmeno spese aggiuntive, visto che la maggior parte dell’hardware e del software più recente già supporta la nuova versione del protocollo. Cover art is used by many devices and applications to improve identification of albums and songs. Collectors on the other hand want to make sure that their mp3 collection is complete and covers are obviously a part of that.

Creevity Mp3 Cover Downloader is a free software for Windows that makes it dead easy to add covers to mp3 files. The program scans the My Music folder on startup and displays covers for the first mp3 file found in it. It is possible to browse for another folder in case the music collection is stored elsewhere.

Information about the active song are displayed at the top along with controls to play it and switch to another one stored in the folder. Mp3 Cover Downloader downloads six covers automatically from the Internet and displays them in its interface. A click on any of the covers and the selection of Apply adds the cover to the mp3 file.

A prompt like the one shown on the screenshot below is displayed if a cover is already present in the mp3 file.

A click on load other covers loads additional covers from the web. This is handy if the six covers listed are not matching the mp3 file.

Left and right arrows on the keyboard, and left and right icons in the header are used to switch between mp3 files stored in the active folder.

Mp3 Cover Downloader is a fast responsive program to add or change mp3 album covers. It unfortunately misses a feature to add a cover to all mp3 files of a folder which means that it takes longer than it should to add the same cover to all mp3 files of a folder.

Mp3 Cover Downloader is available at the developer website over at Creevity. It tested without problems on a 64-bit Windows 7 Professional test system. Developers state that the application is compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows from Windows XP on.

We get a lot of messages from users asking when a particular area will be getting an imagery update, which we're unable to answer. While we never know of those updates ahead of time, Google has just released a new tool called Follow Your World that will notify you each time there are imagery updates in the area(s) you specify.

It's a remarkably simple tool -- just find your location on the map, give it a name, and they'll send you an email when they have new imagery for that area. We're not yet sure how quickly they send the emails when new imagery is released, but we assume it will be after they imagery has migrated to Google Maps since people can use this tool for both Google Earth and Google Maps. As you may know from our recent imagery updates, new imagery arrives in Google Earth first, then shows up in Google Maps a few days later.

It's unknown whether Google will use this information to help decide where to publish future imagery updates, but it seems unlikely. There are a lot of steps involved in posting new imagery. In addition, Google could likely look at the overall usage pattens in Earth and Maps by simply calculating which image tiles were loaded most often.

Lastly, a few readers emailed us about this last week, but Google had asked us to hold on the story until today while they polished up a few things. We certainly appreciate those tips, so never hesitate to contact us if you find a new site like this, fresh imagery, or anything Google Earth-related that might be of interest to others.

Conky is a light-weight system monitor that displays the info on your desktop - you've seen it in many screenshots so I'm sure most of you already know what Conky is. Conky Colors is a tool that make is very easy to set up and configure Conky.

A new Conky Colors version has been released (5.0 beta 1) today which adds a beautiful new 'board mode' which you can see in the screenshot in the beginning of the post. Here's another screenshot using a light (Radiance) Conky Colors theme:

How to use Conky Colors Board Mode

To use the new Conky Colors board mode, firstly you'll have to set up Conky and Conky Colors as explained in THIS post.

To set up the 'board' mode, use '--board' when configuring Conky Colors. Here are all the options available for the board mode:

--w= - Set your screen width
--h= - Set your screen height
--theme=<theme> - Set default theme color (Doesn't work with skiki-colors/shikidust/dust themes)
--dark - Set Dark Brightness (Doesn't work with ambiance/radiance/elementary themes)
--alldark - Set Dark Brightness for all (Doesn't work with any theme)
--alllight - Set light Brightness for all (Doesn't work with any theme)
--cpu=<number> - Set number of cpu cores [max=2]
--unit=<C|F> - Force output temperature either in Celius or Fahrenheit

Here is the exact command that I've used to create the Conky Colors configuration that you can see in the first screenshot in this post:

./conky-colors --board --w=1920 --h=1080 --cpu=2 --dark

Unfortunately there are two drawbacks to this new board mode: it supports a maximum of 2 CPUs - hopefully it will get support for more CPUs in the future (as this is still in beta); there's not much you can customize about it, unlike the default Conky Colors mode which has a huge list of options so if you want more info on your desktop, use that instead.

Zoho Viewer doesn’t support a variety of file formats as Zamzar does but the service is instant and doesn’t ask for your email address.
