The Skype team has just released a beta version of Skype 5 for Windows. The new version introduces group video calling for up to 5 people. The video calling feature is advertised as a free trial suggesting that it will become a pa-only feature in future versions of Skype, like when the final version of Skype 5 is released.

Skype video calling is currently in beta which means that there will be some rough edges and situations where not everything works out as intended.

To work with video calling every attendee of the group video call needs to run the Skype 5 beta.

Group video calls can then be initiated by using the add button to invite people into conversation and clicking the Video Call button afterwards.

Skype group video calls require a fast Internet connection and a “reasonably” new computer system. It is however not entirely clear what the developer’s mean by this.

Group video calling is advertised as one of the new premium features that the developers will roll out in 2010 suggesting that there will be additional pay-only features integrated into the voice over IP software.

Group video calls has been announced for Mac systems for later this year as well.

The release notes list other improvements and new features in Skype 5:

Sono forse riuscito a spiegare ad una “persona analogica” la reputazione online in quattro brevi punti…

1. La tua reputazione è quello che gli altri dicono di te quando non ci sei (es: Bar).


2. Sul Web le persone parlano di te sia pubblicamente (es: Blog) che privatamente (es: Facebook Chat); non sempre puoi essere ovunque, ma spesso puoi ascoltare questa conversazione a posteriori (es: Google Alert).


3. Google non dimentica: qualsiasi cosa messa online da te o altri è per sempre; potrebbe essere ok oggi, ma domani?


4. Generare i contenuti corretti su di te e sui tuoi servizi e condividerli nei Social Network (es: Twitter), da agli altri qualcosa su cui parlare e puoi favorire una buona reputazione…

Per ora è il minimo insieme di concetti che sono riuscito ad utilizzare…

Si può far di meglio?

L’idea alla base di Incarnate non è poi così originale, ma la sua realizzazione si distingue da altri tentativi simili per la possibilità di mettere insieme diverse soluzioni in un unico passaggio: si tratta di recuperare e riutilizzare la stessa immagine come avatar del profilo su tutti i servizi web cui si è iscritti — quanto già predisposto da Gravatar con le e-mail.

Il valore aggiunto di Incarnate sta proprio in questo: Gravatar viene «considerato come un altro provider» (cit.) e le immagini associate tramite il servizio possono essere selezionate scegliendo d’inserire un indirizzo e-mail al posto di un nickname come query nel form di Incarnate. Il funzionamento è simile alla feature Sync Avatars del pannello di HootSuite.

Incarnate – che è un servizio della piattaforma MIX Online di Microsoft, basato su Windows Azure – è molto più utile a content provider e web designer in genere che non agli utenti finali, perché grazie alle API per JSON e JSON-P consente di automatizzare le sue funzioni — magari in fase di registrazione. Un buon modo di preservare la propria identità online.

I’ve always enjoyed big, ambitious and sometimes slightly bizarre projects. For instance, you might remember a few years back when a bunch of Googlers and I ordered a quarter-ton of Silly Putty for the fun of it. More recently, I had the thought that it would be neat to create a “real” photomosaic — that is, not a poster where you have many tiny, postage-stamp-sized images playing the role of the “tiles” that make up a larger image, but a collection of real, high-resolution 4×6 photographs making up a bigger picture.

Part of the appeal of this project was that it was complicated. First, in order to have enough “tiles” to make the underlying image clear, I knew we’d need a really, really large wall. Second, for you to be able to appreciate both the underlying image and the individual tiles, you’d have to be able to see the mosaic from a large distance (so the tiles blend to create the larger image), and also be able to walk right up to it to look at individual photographs. So the wall would have to be at the end of a long hallway. Third, if you can inspect individual images, then those images would have to be nice, crisp, high-resolution photographs. So I’d have to amass a whole bunch of really high-resolution photos directly from good photographers, and I’d have to figure out exactly where to place all those photos within the image. And finally, I knew I’d need a lot of people to help glue all the photos!

Fortunately, working at Google puts me in a position where these things are possible: we had a giant open wall at the end of a hallway in our London offices; two dozen avid Google photographers uploaded 5,000 photos to use as the tiles (using Picasa, of course); and everyone I talked to about the project said, “That’s neat! How can I help?” So last week, a group of friends, fellow Googlers and I completed our project: a giant Google logo (and yes, it’s the new logo) made out of 884 individually printed 4×6 photographs of people, places and things around the U.K.

We were all really pleased with the result, and it’s best viewed in person. Seeing it from 100 feet away, taking it in clearly as the Google logo, and then walking right up to it to inspect the details of individual images is very cool. But for anyone not in London, here’s an attempt to recreate that experience:

We also took a time-lapse video of the construction process, which started in the evening and went late into the night. (The later it got, the hazier we felt — not because of the hour, but because of all of the fumes from the rubber cement!) The camera took a shot every seven seconds, so about 5.5 hours of work are compressed to a bit over a minute here. The video is best seen in full screen HD so you can see the individual photos as they go up:

If the latest NPD report is to be believed, then yes. It really should not be a surprise, however. There are multiple Android devices scurried across every major carrier in the U.S. alone, and in addition to be priced very competitively, Verizon’s BOGO has no doubt moved quite a few units. NPD’s consumer research data comes from self-reported online consumer surveys and it does not include corporate sales information which will most likely change some of these numbers. Regardless, the actual split in terms of U.S. smartphone share, as reported, has RIM at 36%, Google Android at 28%, and Apple coming in at 21%. Apple hasn’t released a new model since June of last year, and we can’t help but think some of those tech-savvy people out there (BGR readers) are just holding off, but you have to give it to Android this time around — the Android Army has spoken.

And the good Froyo news just keep flowing in. TechCrunch have flexed their exclusive muscle this morning in revealing their discovery that Android 2.2 will come with built-in tethering and WiFi hotspot support. That means you'll be able to use your phone's 3G internet connection to hook your laptop up to the worldwide webosphere, with a choice of wired or wireless methods. Of course, this dreamy scenario will be subject to the big bad network operators permitting -- or at least not forbidding -- you to do such awesome things with your hardware, but at least we know the goods are being baked into this forthcoming release from Google. Frozen yogurt for all!
