Have you ever wondered what the trends of tomorrow will be? What people will be talking about? You can now get a headstart with Zoofs, a brand new service that scans Twitter for video links and aggregates them into a most popular listing on their website.

According to information posted on the service’s website more than 2.1 million videos have been discovered in the past 22 days.

The site opens with a video wall with controls at the top of it. Each video is displayed with a thumbnail and playtime. Hovering the mouse over the video displays the video’s title which sometimes happens to be in a foreign language.

The controls at the top can be used to filter the video listing. It is possible to view only videos of a specific category, e.g. sports, news and politics or comedy, switch to a list format for an better overview or change the video upload date from anytime to last 72 hours.

Zoofs is an entertaining and interesting site. A search is missing as well as an option to filter videos by language. Users who like viral videos should give the service a try.

Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich created this installation, simply called The Swimming Pool, for The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan. A 10cm layer of water over a piece of glass separates above from below. It must be a pretty serious piece of glass; some back-of-the-envelope math based on the published dimensions gives 1,100 kg (2400 lbs) of water that it has to support. Plus its own weight. Major University Dumps Gmail Over Security Concerns: "

The University of California – Davis has stopped using Gmail for its 30,000-member staff and faculty body. The university was trying Gmail for faculty and staff with plans to roll out service to the entire campus. But school officials say this email system isn’t secure or private enough to meet their standards.

CIO Peter Siegel, Academic Senate IT chair Niels Jensen and Campus Council IT chair Joe Kiskis said the plug was pulled on Gmail because faculty were concerned that Google’s services wouldn’t keep their correspondence private enough. Many privacy experts also say that Gmail’s social component, Google Buzz, is the source of privacy and security vulnerabilities.

School officials also noted, “Outsourcing e-mail may not be in compliance with the University of California Electronic Communications Policy.”

About a month ago, Yale University made a similar decision. Yale’s concerns centered around security issues, technological risks and the way Google manages data in the cloud.

On the other hand, however, many other schools and local governments are using Gmail and Google Apps to great effect, including lower IT costs. Just last year, Los Angeles “went Google”, a proposal that was agreed upon unanimously by the city council. Washington, D.C., also uses Google’s applications and services, including Gmail.

Saving energy is essential for mobile computing users to extend the battery life of the device. Lowering the energy consumption has a direct effect on the energy costs.

Reduced energy usage can on the other hand impact a PC’s performance up to the point where it is no longer reasonable and needs to be turned off completely.

Granola, formerly known as MicroMiser, is a energy saving software for Windows and Linux computer systems that uses algorithms to find the ideal balance between energy saving and performance requirements.

It works in this regard much like similar applications such as Local Cooling or Edison that we have reviewed in the past.

The cross-platform application Granola offers an unobtrusive method of saving energy. It concentrates its energy saving efforts on the cpu by using dynamic voltage and frequency scaling technologies. It basically means that the cpu will be lowered or raised depending on the power requirements of the system.

Granola runs quietly in the background displaying energy saving information in its interface when opened. This includes the projected kWh, money and CO2 that is saved yearly if the software is used throughout the year. Examples are given on how much energy is saved.

It is possible to save some energy with Granola. It would be nice if the software would not only regulate the cpu energy consumption but that of other PC hardware as well. It is possible to use the standard power saving options to do that but a software that would handle all of those to compute the energy savings would be more than welcome.

How Google Collects WiFi Data: "After Germany's Federal Commissioner for Data Protection criticized Google for using Street View cars to scan wireless networks, Google posted a detailed answer that explains how Google collects data about WiFi networks to improve location based services like Google Maps for Mobile. Google says that collecting WiFi network information is not illegal and many other companies collect this data.


Visibly attached to the roof of each vehicle is a commercially available Maxrad BMMG24005 omnidirectional radio antenna. This antennae receives publicly broadcast wifi radio signals within range of the vehicle.

The vehicle travels at normal road speeds, and so spends only a very short amount of time within the range of any given wifi access point.

The signals are initially processed onboard in the car, using software including the standard Kismet open source application. The data is then further processed when transferred to servers within a Google Data Centre, and used to compile the Google location based services database.

The equipment within the vehicle operates passively, receiving signals broadcast to it but not actively seeking or initiating a communication with the access point.

The information visible to the equipment is that which is publicly broadcast over the radio network, using the 802.11 standard. This includes the 802.11 b/g/n protocols.

The equipment is able to receive data from all broadcast frames. This includes, from the header data, SSID and MAC addresses. (...) The equipment also separately records the signal strength and channel of the broadcast at the point at which it was received by our equipment, and is able to establish the protocol used (i.e. 802.11b/g/n).

The data which we collect is used to provide location based services within Google products and to users of the Geolocation API. For example, users of Google Maps for Mobile can turn on My Location to identify their approximate location based on cell towers and wifi access points which are visible to their device. (...) Google currently uses 2 pieces of the data collected during the driving operation to build its database and provide location based services - the MAC address of the access point and the GPS co-ordinates of the vehicle at the point at which the access point was visible. This data is stored in aggregate form, and is used to provide the location based service.

Google location based services using wifi access point data work as follows:

* The user's device sends a request to the Google location server with a list of MAC addresses which are currently visible to the device;
* The location server compares the MAC addresses seen by the user's device with its list of known MAC addresses, and identifies associated geocoded locations (i .e. latitude / longitude);
* The location server then uses the geocoded locations associated with visible MAC address to triangulate the approximate location of the user;
* This approximate location is geocoded and sent back to the user's device.

Now that Motorola decided to replace Google's location services for Android with Skyhook, Google needs to improve the accuracy of the results.
