48ers è un promettente motore che effettua ricerche attraverso i social network. Supporta del.icio.us, Digg, Facebook, Google Buzz e Twitter (in rigoroso ordine alfabetico). L’engine è ancora in fase sperimentale, ma è aperto al pubblico e già pienamente funzionante.

L’idea dei creatori di 48ers è quella di offrire una piattaforma che aiuti gli utenti a rintracciare le conversazioni in corso sui social network. Niente di nuovo, se consideriamo gli sforzi di Bing e Google per fare altrettanto. Eppure, 48ers è particolarmente accurato.

È curiosa l’origine del nome 48ers: si tratta della definizione affidata ai cercatori d’oro californiani in un libro del 1975. Come su Twitter è possibile partire da alcuni Trending Topics suggeriti in prima pagina. I risultati delle ricerche sembrano davvero soddisfacenti, confrontati con motori come Google Real Time.

Upload Picasa People Photos to Google Contacts: "Picasa 3.8 makes it easier to upload pictures for your Google contacts. After scanning all the photos from your library and adding name tags to your photos, you can go to the Tools menu, select Upload and click on Upload People Thumbnails.


Picasa asks if 'you want to upload and replace all the thumbnail photos from your People Albums to your Google Contacts'. If you click on 'Upload', Picasa saves the photos to Google Contacts and you can see them in Gmail or in any other application that synchronizes with Google Contacts (for example, Android's Contacts app or iPhone's Contacts app, if you use Google Sync).

If you don't want to upload photos for all your contacts, you can click on one of the people from Picasa's sidebar, right on a photo and select 'Set as Google Contacts Thumbnail'. You can also enable 'Upload people album thumbnails to Google Contacts' from Tools/Options/Name Tags (or Picasa/Preferences/Name Tags on a Mac) to upload the new thumbnails you select in Picasa.

It's strange to see that Google didn't add this option to Picasa Web Albums and that the photos tagged in Picasa Web Albums aren't displayed in Google Contacts. Google could at least offer the option to pick one of the photos tagged in Picasa Web Albums when you add a picture to one of your contacts. Right now, you can only select a photo from your public albums.

Se mai vi foste domandati a cosa servano e dove finiscano i dati d’utilizzo raccolti in forma anonima dalle applicazioni, Pivot potrebbe essere una delle tante risposte possibili. È evidente che la maggior parte delle informazioni reperite dai programmi serve per condurre indagini statistiche di mercato, ma cosa accade ai dati trasmessi quando una campagna è terminata? Microsoft Live Labs ci offre la sua soluzione.

Pivot è un’applicazione per la ricerca attraverso quelle enormi raccolte di dati anonimi acquisite da Microsoft. Per intenderci, si tratta delle informazioni inviate ad esempio con Windows Live Messenger (se si è accordata l’autorizzazione). Il risultato è un database pressoché illimitato di dati pubblici da consultare. Pivot è una pesante interfaccia grafica che sfrutta Silverlight per navigare tra queste informazioni.

Sì, Pivot è molto “pesante” perché il trattamento di un simile ammontare di dati richiede elevati requisiti di sistema. Stiamo parlando di un processore da almeno 2Ghz, Windows Vista/7 con Aero abilitato e 256Mb min. di RAM video. Tutto ciò per «partecipare a un esperimento» che a sua volta dovrebbe essere una prova sul campo per il futuro di Bing.

Google just updated Chrome to Phone to version 2.0 and it is now available for devices running Android 2.2. The service is a combination of an Android app (scan QR code) and Chrome extension which allows users to send items from their browser to their phone including a current web page, map, YouTube video, or selected phone number or text.

Chrome to Phone uses the new Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) framework that was included in Android 2.2. Google describes C2DM as a “simple, lightweight mechanism that servers can use to tell mobile applications to contact the server directly, to fetch updated application or user data”. The C2DM feature will eventually be available to all developers, but it is currently launched in Labs and devs need to signup to request access.

Firefox users can also join in the fun by installing the Fox To Phone extension.

Chrome to Phone features:

• YouTube links launch the YouTube app.


• Selecting phone numbers in Web pages, launches the dialer with the number pre-populated.
